Sharks 2: The re-model
0

So its been a while since I set up my aquarium and, apart from the regular maintenance and a bout of finrot spurred on by an injury, all is going well. This weekend I decided that it was time for the change I’d been planning in my for the last month.
I decided to add a lot more cover for the bottom dwellers, to give them more security and make them feel comfortable. The result of this is that I see them a lot more, which was the idea :)
All in all, it looks more like a natural habitat. A more pleasant environment for the now happier fish.

Sharks!
0I
The other day I got my aquarium all set up. There have been a few issues with getting everything balanced but we’re getting there.
I got it from my friend who had 2 and needed the space and some of the equipment needs a little TLC, so over the next few weeks I’ll be overhauling the lot.
There were already several fish in there when I received it, A Silver Shark, Red-Finned Shark, Upside-down Catfish to name a few. Over the weekend I added some Red-Eye Tetra as it’s a fairly large tank and isn’t particularly crowded. There will likely be further additions over the coming weeks, watch this space :-)
I have to say, they are mesmerizing… I’ll be in the middle of something and ten minutes later I find myself staring at them. Seemingly I ca…..
Irssi Plugin – boomkick.pl
0I use IRC regularly – we use it to communicate at work, as well as hovering in various community rooms over the web to try to provide and/or get help with various computer type problems.
Well today we were larking about kicking one another from our main channel and one of the other developers mentioned that his IRC client made an impressive “Artillery” noise when someone got kicked. I decided that that sort of sillyness was for me, and as I use Irssi I decided to knock up a quick plugin.
You can download it here.
In the tarball is the plugin script and an explosion .wav I found. Copy the .wav (or one of your own) and boomkick.pl to ~/.irssi/scripts/autorun and edit the script so you can tell it where to find the .wav and what it’s called!
Then fire up irssi and test the sound with the “/playboom” command. If you hear a boom (or your .wav) then next time someone gets kicked, you’ll know about it :-)
I will point out that the plugin requires sox to be installed on your system (AFAIK sox comes with most distros). A comment at the top of boomkick.pl does mention how to test you have it installed.
Yes it’s silly, no I don’t care. You know you’ll try it :-)

One step closer to another ounce of crazy on the roads
0A big congratulations to my brother who today, passed his motorcycle theory test! Yet another lunatic joining us hardcore conveyance enthusiasts.
Wishing him all the best for his CBT and motorcycle training course. Then we can go bike shopping :-)
Well done Ad, Grats

WordPress for Android
0I’ve just installed the WordPress app from the Android market. Have to say, it’s pretty swish. Allows you to post/comment and approve stuff – all on move. All the control, none of the cruft!
Should be useful as I always think of stuff to blog when I’m not near my computer, and forget when I am :)

Losing My Tradition
1It seems apparent that we’re losing yet another Tradition under the wheels of the modern “Hate everyone you don’t know” attitude.
Anyone that has been riding a motorcycle for a fair few years will tell you that when they pass bikers on the other side of the road, they nod. I still do, but the number of responses I get in kind is dwindling.
WTF people. Pretty soon we’ll all be walking around scowling at each other because “thats how society is”. Lets not let that happen!
Ride a bike? See another bike, Nod. Simple.
Cop-out!
2Well, I’ve done it…
I’ve always said, as a developer that I would never have an ‘off the shelf’ site powered by one of those fancy “does everything you need it to” blog engines. To me its just lazy; with all our knowledge, experience and ability as web developers / programmers we should be building our own sites. Well, we *should*….
I’ve been developing and re-developing my “new” site for about 6 years now and tonight I sat down, yet again, to get my site sorted. I started, again, outlining what I wanted it to do, how I wanted it to look … Yeah, again.
So I decided to cave! I grabbed a web browser and hit wordpress.org. Taa-Daa! 5 minutes later new site. Magic.
I do however feel like a complete cop-out and shall walk around with my head hung low for several days to reflect that fact. Although I suppose it’s like any tradesman, you spend all day doing something – the last thing you want to do when you come home is that very same thing!
Meh…
